On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Turkey and Syria, leaving thousands of buildings and hospitals collapsed into rubble. Across both regions, the fatalities have exceeded 20,000, and this death toll continues to rise. Thousands of others were left severely injured or homeless due to the massive earthquake. These populations are especially vulnerable due to the region's history of humanitarian crises, poor healthcare infrastructure, and economic instability. The disastrous earthquake has only exacerbated their suffering.

The Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) has been working on the ground in both Syria and Turkey to provide emergency care for countless earthquake victims. SAMS hospitals located throughout northwest Syria and Turkey are currently overwhelmed with patients, and some medical facilities have also been destroyed. Donations to the Upstate Foundation’s Syria and Turkey Earthquake Relief Fund will help SAMS address this immediate need by providing trauma supplies and developing a comprehensive emergency response to save lives and treat the injured.

Several Upstate student organizations have formed a coalition to raise money and provide medical relief for this emergency situation. This coalition has agreed to match donations up to a total of $500. All proceeds will go directly to aiding communities on the frontline through SAMS.

The following Upstate student groups involved in organizing this fundraiser thank you for your support.

Physicians for Human Rights

National Arab American Medical Association
