Nychole and Jason Utter of Hannibal noticed that Jason was gaining weight, but they didn’t think much of it until he felt a lump in his abdomen. He was referred to the Upstate Cancer Center for surgery because it turned out his innocent-looking “beer belly” was a life-threatening liposarcoma.

“It was one of the scariest things we’ve ever dealt with,” said Nychole, who is a nurse. Jason was only 43 when this happened.

While Jason recovered in the hospital, “Dr. Kelly came in from home, on her day off, to check on him,” Nychole said. “The compassion that she has is astounding.”
