John B. McCabe, MD, Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Department of Emergency Medicine has established the John B. McCabe, MD, Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Upstate Foundation in honor of Dr. McCabe, who recently retired after a truly remarkable career at Upstate Medical University.

The twofold goal of this scholarship is to honor and perpetuate Dr. McCabe’s legacy at Upstate and in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and to foster interest in emergency medicine as a career path and attract bright young talent to our health care system.

Dr. McCabe began his Upstate career in 1979 as one of first graduates of the College of Medicine to pursue a formal residency in emergency medicine. He joined the Upstate faculty in 1987, serving (among other posts) as the inaugural chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine before ultimately being named Upstate Health System CEO – where his many achievements included oversight of the openings of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and Upstate Cancer Center, acquisition of Community General Hospital, and the designation of Upstate as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Beyond Upstate, Dr. McCabe served as president of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and American Board of Medical Specialties; was a published authority on emergency medicine; practiced at the Syracuse VA Medical Center; conducted research on emergency medicine; and was both an instructor and inspiration to countless young doctors.

Clearly, Dr. McCabe’s legacy has been a profound one. Please join us in ensuring that legacy continues by lending your financial support to the John B. McCabe MD Endowed Scholarship Fund.
