Christian’s mother, Therese, was in the middle of yardwork when she got the call. Due to a dirt bike accident, her son was being life flighted to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital with multiple injuries including a traumatic spinal cord injury. Can you imagine?

A three-sport athlete looking forward to his high school graduation, Christian’s life was upended. While fellow students were focusing on end-of-year milestones and next steps, Christian’s world now involved treatment plans and rehabilitation. Many emotions came with dealing with an enormous loss of ability and life change. There was much grief to process.

A source of consolation for the family was Rachel, Christian’s sister who is a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Children’s Hospital. Her proximity to Christian gave them comfort and hope.

Given all the challenges ahead for Christian, the Child Life team at the Children’s Hospital recognized there was something they could do to give him a sense of normalcy. While he was forced to miss his graduation ceremony, there was no reason not to celebrate.

“They hosted an amazing graduation party for me,” Christian explained. “I got to invite dozens of my closest family members, friends and teachers. We had pizza, cookies, decorations, and music that I got to select.”

“It was such a blessing for all of us,” Therese said gratefully. “An event like this makes you realize how delicate life is and how special people are.”
