Research on Diet for Cancer Patients

Greetings! I am a 4th year medical student from State University of New York Upstate Medical University, who wants to become an oncologist. I have dedicated the past 10 years to launch a clinical trial using dietary intervention (low-carbohydrate diet) such as Ketogenic or Atkins diet combined with the conventional cancer treatment.

A recent animal data supports that in mice with brain cancer, when ketogenic diet is applied during radiation therapy, you get a significant improvements in prognosis: Ketogenic Diet on Mice Brain Tumor Model

Here at State University of New York Upstate Cancer Center , I have worked with other physicians to launch a feasibility trial to use low carbohydrate diet for glioblastoma patients during their standard treatment.

Dr. Lawrence Chin, our Neurosurgery Department Chair is serving as my mentor: Upstate Neurosurgery

Dr. Chin has been very supportive of this idea and we want to start this trial soon.

We plan to enroll about 1 or 2 patients every month. In order to help these patients comply to the diet, they will need an electronic scale (to make sure they don't over eat carbohydrate), ketone breath taker (to ensure patients are under ketosis during the radiation treatment) and commercially available ketogenic shakes to help them get through the diet.

Your support may change the outcome of these patients' treatment and may contribute to fundamentally change how we treat cancer patients. Imagine that one's diet can improve the outcome of the treatment. This is a start of our journey to work with cancer patients all around the world to do an evidenced based clinical trials so that we can truly provide the best treatment options for cancer patients.

I would like to share this recently published New York Times Article that introduces an idea of starving cancer to death: Starve Cancer to Death

Thank you all for your support.
Sincerely,
Hans Kim
