Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital
Donations to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital help provide essential funding for programs and services aimed at enhancing the well-being of pediatric patients, often beyond the traditional health care model.
Patient story
One morning, 14-year-old Aidan left for school like any other day. Soon after, his mom Carrie received a call that he had collapsed outside his classroom. 911 was called and the school nurse was notified. The nurse, a former 20-year cardiovascular intensive care nurse, immediately began performing CPR, then used an automated external defibrillator (AED) as Aidan drifted in and out of consciousness.
Paramedics arrived and Aidan was taken to the emergency department at Wilson Hospital in Binghamton in critical condition. He was then airlifted to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital where pediatric cardiologist Dr. Frank Smith was waiting for his arrival. After Aidan was stabilized, Dr. Smith conferred with a pediatric cardiac surgeon in New York City and Aidan was airlifted to the downstate hospital where an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) was implanted in his heart.
“The experience at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital was the most amazing of our lives,” Carrie says gratefully. “Every doctor and nurse went above and beyond, and showed extraordinary compassion, made the family feel comfortable and always had an answer to every question.”
