Oncenter  •  Patron Party 7 pm  •  Gala 8 pm  •  Black Tie optional

Celebrate Upstate Medical University by attending the Gala, Upstate Foundation’s 29th annual black-tie event, which will be held on Friday, November 16. Festivities begin at 8 pm, with the pre-Gala patron and sponsor party starting at 7 pm, at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center at Oncenter.

Co-chairs for this year’s event are Wanda Fremont, MD, and Marla Byrnes. Dr. Fremont is medical director for Upstate’s child and adolescent psychiatry clinic, and vice chair of child psychiatry for the department of psychiatry at Upstate Medical University. Ms. Byrnes is president of NAMI Syracuse. NAMI is an acronym for National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Proceeds from the 2018 Gala will benefit child and adolescent psychiatric services at Upstate University Hospital. The need for this support is significant: over the past few years, there has been a five-fold increase in children and adolescents coming to the Emergency Department with behavioral health complaints; rates are rising for suicide attempts and self harm (they are up a staggering 25 percent among adolescent girls); and currently there is a five-day wait for children and adolescents to find a psychiatric bed.

“Support will also be given to the creation of a new eight-bed pediatric psychiatric unit at the hospital’s downtown campus,” said Eileen Pezzi, vice president for development at Upstate. “We are especially pleased to be part of this initiative given the dramatic need for these beds. It will enable some children to receive care in our community rather than have to travel out of town.”
