Claire B. Wightman Volunteer Enrichment
Endowment Fund

Claire Wightman’s daughter, Barbie, discovered a treasure while sorting through Claire’s belongings after her passing. Claire’s baby book, lovingly created by her own mother, chronicled Claire’s early milestones. On the day of Claire’s birth, May 18, 1926, her mother placed a calendar page in the book that featured this thought for the day…

“There are souls in this world who have the gift of finding joy everywhere, and leaving it behind them when they go.” Frederick William Faber, English hymnwriter and theologian

Underneath the quote, in her own handwriting, Claire’s mother wrote, “Mother wants you to live up to this motto.”

Claire took her mother’s words to heart. She lived with joy and a sense of purpose that guided her through a lifetime touched by losses, but inspired by enduring faith and hope.

As expressed in Claire’s obituary, her true legacy is one of generosity and compassion. For 46 years and logging 23,345 hours, Claire was one of the longest serving volunteers in Upstate Community Hospital’s history. She was known for always helping others in times of need, and for the simple act of never forgetting to make a call or send a card on every birthday and anniversary, honoring the special milestones of her dear family and many friends. Simply put, Claire was best remembered for always remembering others.

Claire’s legacy continues as together, her family and the Upstate Foundation honor her with the Claire B. Wightman Volunteer Enrichment Endowment Fund. This fund in Claire’s name is a fitting tribute that celebrates her commitment to volunteerism, ability to find the joy in life, and sincere care and compassion for others.

On behalf of the Upstate Foundation and Claire’s children, Debbie, Barbie, Bill, and their extended families, heartfelt thanks for making a gift that will support future generations of volunteers who much like Claire, strive to make a meaningful difference each and every day.
