Seven words spoken on March 29, 2011 forever changed the lives of Jeanelle Crowell Cross, her family and friends. “Your biopsy was positive for breast cancer.”
Jeanelle’s breast cancer was a particularly aggressive form – a stage 4 ductal carcinoma that had already metastasized in her lymph nodes and liver. Many weeks of chemotherapy, surgery and multiple rounds of radiation did not stop this aggressive cancer. In September 2012, Jeanelle was admitted to Upstate University Hospital and three days later she passed away. She was 31 years old.
In the face of something so unexpected and extraordinarily difficult, Jeanelle, lovingly known as Jel, fought her battle with courage and a positive attitude. She did not let cancer define her. And she believed, without a doubt, that something good, something positive would come out of her cancer journey. And it has.
Family and friends honored Jel’s wish by establishing the AnJel Fund for Young Women with Breast Cancer at the Upstate Foundation to support women under age 40 who are being treated for breast cancer at the Upstate Cancer Center. The AnJel Fund offers patients a variety of services and items including makeovers, spa services, house cleaning, family entertainment packages – pampering and an emotional lift at a time when it is needed most. AnJel’s Fund care bags, filled with crossword puzzle and word search books, magazines, and playing cards, help patients pass the time during their treatments.
