Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital - Year in Review

It has been a little over three years since the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital opened its Tree House entrance to welcome patients and visitors to its child-and family-friendly environment, complete with glow-in-the dark stars, Dr. Seuss-like doors and, most important, care based on the philosophy that children are not just small adults.

Last month, the children’s hospital released its 2012 Year in Review. Here are a few of the report’s interesting statistics:

• Build it and they will come, and come they did. Today, Golisano is staffed by 80 attending physicians, including 10 pediatric specialists hired just this past year: three hospitalists and one each in anesthesiology, general surgery, neurology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, pulmonology and radiology. Golisano doctors work with 39 residents and two fellows.
• The children’s hospital has a patient satisfaction rate of 93 percent among inpatients and outpatients, with 96 percent of patients rating their care at nine or 10 on a 10-point scale.
• Fifty-eight percent of patients are admitted to Golisano through Upstate’s pediatric emergency room. For the fiscal year from July 2011 to June 2012 4,303 pediatric patients were discharged from Golisano, 2,636 had inpatient surgery and 3,187 had outpatient surgery.

The Upstate Golisano After Hours Care center opened in February 2012 on the Community campus, providing care from 4 to 11 p.m. weeknights and noon to 11 p.m. weekends. In the first six months of operation, 2,893 children were treated with 4 percent split between being transferred to Upstate’s pediatric emergency room on the Downtown Campus or admitted to the children’s hospital.

• The children’s hospital’s footprint covers a 17- county area, with 91 percent of Golisano patients coming from the counties of Broome, Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and St. Lawrence.

A “hospital within a hospital,” the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital is housed on the 11^th and 12^th floors of the East Tower of Upstate University Hospital’s Downtown Campus. The Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital is part of Upstate Medical University, one of only 125 academic medical centers in the country that lead the nation in conducting medical research, educating health professionals, and providing the most complex care to patients. Under the leadership of Upstate Medical University Foundation, philanthropic dollars were raised by the communities Upstate serves to build the children’s hospital.
