Debbie’s Brain Cancer Research Endowment

Debbie Gregg was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008. In the years following her diagnosis, Debbie lived to fight this dreaded disease not only for herself and those who loved her, but remarkably for many others as well. She was determined to not only battle the disease ravaging her body, but fight to raise awareness and much-needed resources to support brain cancer research. Her goal was to help identify better treatment options for patients and someday, hopefully, a cure. Out of that determination and hope the Debbie’s Brain Cancer Research Fund was established at the Upstate Foundation. The purpose of the fund is to support brain cancer research at Upstate Medical University, which it has for over 10 years.

Despite an arduous treatment plan, Debbie sponsored and helped implement several fundraising events. She rallied friends, family, community members and local businesses to participate, and in a testament to Debbie, participate they did! After Debbie passed away in 2012, her family carried forward her legacy of hope and her vision for the brain cancer research fund.

In a recent demonstration of their commitment and generosity, Debbie’s family members opened an endowment fund at the Upstate Foundation – Debbie’s Brain Cancer Research Endowment – to support the same research and ensure Debbie’s legacy will exist in perpetuity at Upstate.

To date, nearly $140,000 has been raised and $65,000 has been spent from the fund to support brain cancer-related research at Upstate.
